Meltons celebrate 50th anniversary

Leon and Saundra Gail (Hurst) Melton observed 50 years of marriage on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007. The celebration, hosted by their children and grandchildren, was held from 2-4 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 102 East 4th St., Claremore.

Leon was born in Berryville, Ark. April 1, 1931, to John Abraham Melton and Myrtle (Teal) Melton, but also lived in California and Oklahoma. Leon is a veteran of the Korea War and has been self-employed over 50 years, first as owner of Tulsa Transmission Service in Tulsa, then as owner of Transmission Service Company after moving his family to a home place five miles south on US 66 where he lived and operated Leon’s Used Cars for many years before retiring and moving back to Tulsa in 1991. They now live on an acreage near Catoosa where Leon can have a nice garden. They attend church at Dawson Freewill Baptist Church.

Saundra was born July 7, 1938, in Muskogee to Lloyd F. and Helen K. (Casteel) Hurst. She graduated from Bristow High School and moved to Tulsa to attend Draughon’s School of Business. She was working for Rockwell Manufacturing when she and Leon met. They were married Nov. 15, 1957, in Tahlequah. After being an “at home” mom for 17 years, in 1974 Saundra went back to work, beginning at Claremore Progress for about three years; then to Mabee Petroleum in Tulsa. In 1984 she went to work for American Airlines/Sabre, Inc., retiring in 2000.

They are the parents of Jimmie Lee Melton of Tulsa, David Wayne Melton and wife, Lisa (Bridwell) of Claremore; Billy Leon Melton (deceased); and Leah Gail (Melton) Harman and husband, Clayton Lee Harman of Norman.

Grandchildren are: Donnie and Kammi McDonald; Brandon Leon Melton; Sarah Elizabeth (Melton) Roach and John Andrew Melton, and Matthew Franklin Harman and Benjamin Cole Harman.
