Wards celebrate 50th wedding anniversary

Dale and Glenda (Crow) Ward are celebrating their golden wedding anniversary.

The couple first met while attending high school at Chouteau. Glenda said she remembers the first time she saw Dale. He was playing football with her brother before school and she told herself that was her man. He, however, was interested in another girl, so it took her more than a year to get his attention.

After a few years of “on again—off again” romance, Dale and Glenda finally married on July 5, 1957. They lived and worked in Tulsa, having daughters Robin and DeAnn while there. They bought a house in the small town of Owasso where their son Clint was born in 1961. When he was three weeks old they moved to Wyoming where son Lincoln was born in 1963.

While Lincoln was still a baby they moved back to their home in Owasso. There were several children all living on Sixth Street—approximately 8 or 9—who spent a lot of time at the Ward residence playing with their four children. The bunch came to be called the “Sixth Street Gang.”

In 1968, Dale and Glenda began looking for some land to buy—somewhere within a 50-mile radius of Tulsa. The first time they came to Chelsea they were impressed with the friendliness of the people with several waving to them from their cars. Mr. Clyde Fraley told them of 80 acres for sale northwest of town. When they drove up to the house they looked at each other and both knew they had found their home. They moved into the house the day after Christmas, 1968. The house needed a lot of work and they have been remodeling ever since, but they still feel like it is “home.”

The Wards will be celebrated 50 years of marriage on Saturday, June 30, with a reception hosted by their children, Robin and Michael Durant of Atoka, Tenn.; DeAnn and Steve Moore of Chelsea; Clint and Mary Ann Ward of Vinita; and Ruth Ward of Owasso, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
