Delay possible for RSU's NCAA Division II transition

CLAREMORE — The NCAA has verbally notified Rogers State University about a recent decision by the organization’s membership committee requiring RSU to repeat year-one of the NCAA Division II candidacy period.

The university can appeal the committee’s decision within 30 days of receiving the written notification. NCAA officials said on Thursday the official notification is expected to be distributed late next week. The NCAA Division II associate director of academic and membership affairs called RSU officials on July 12 with a verbal notification about the membership committee’s decision.

University officials said a decision regarding a possible appeal will occur after the formal notification is received.

“While we are disappointed in the committee’s recommendation, we are confident RSU will take the necessary steps to demonstrate its ability to meet the NCAA’s rigorous membership standards,” Rogers State Interim Athletics Director Tom Volturo said. “We look forward to ongoing dialogue with the NCAA regarding RSU’s candidacy and necessary steps moving forward.”

In June 2012, RSU was officially accepted into the first stage of the process for joining NCAA Division II. During this past year, RSU finished its final year as a member of the NAIA while simultaneously continuing its long-planned steps to become compliant with the rules and regulations governing the NCAA and the Heartland Conference.

The Hillcats will continue its regularly scheduled plans to compete as a provisional member of the NCAA Division II Heartland Conference during the 2013-14 season.
