Chelsea approves plant rebuild

By Krystal J. Carman

Chelsea town officials approved a building permit Thursday for Aztec Galvanizing which plans to rebuild after a fire destroyed the building earlier this year.

Aztec Galvanizing, formerly AAA Galvanizing, will spend $3.2 million rebuilding the facility located in Chelsea Industrial Park and replacing damaged equipment.

John Lincoln, regional general manager of Aztec Galvanizing, said a new boiler system will be added which will contain most of the vapor release, in turn reducing the release into the air by 80 to 90 percent.

The building permit application was originally addressed Monday but was not granted at that time because the town trustees ask for more information concerning the project.

A fire destroyed over half of the facility on June 1, and 32 employees were temporary relocated to a separate Aztec Galvanizing facility near Fayetteville, Ark. The Chelsea plant’s product is also being produced at the same facility.

The request for additional information came about as a result of complaints from nearby residents who say they believe the plant is contaminating their homes.

The residents live in a housing addition directly across the street from the plant have filed a lawsuit. Chelsea Mayor Norman Wooten is among the plaintiffs. Wooten abstained from the discussion Monday and was not present at the meeting Thursday.

On Thursday, the board examined additional documentation Aztec Galvanizing submitted, including a plat, building plans and letters of compliance from DEQ addressing air quality standards. Although those letters of compliance are not normally required to be submitted with a building permit application, the board agreed unanimously Monday that the plant must submit the documents before approval would be granted.

Construction on the new facility, which Lincoln said will be similar to the current building, is set to begin soon with the plant possibly opening to full operating capacity in 12 weeks. Lincoln added that the plant has the opportunity to grow and provide more jobs for people in the Chelsea area.
