Baker Hughes kicks off Susan G. Komen Race for Cure event

Baker Hughes Inc. commemorated the company’s Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Baker Hughes Race Event Thursday in the most uplifting way possible — with a balloon release.
Shortly after 11 a.m., employees gathered near the pond outside the pump plant at Baker Hughes in Claremore to release pink balloons, many of them with tags bearing the names of employees’ family and friends who have dealt with breast cancer.
“Supporting the Susan G. Komen cause is near and dear to our hearts, as it impacts our employees and their families,” said Kelly Walck, Baker Hughes employee. “It provided an opportunity for each of us to release a pink balloon in honor of a loved one or family member affected by breast cancer — this (event) represented just one way to show our support.”
Employees from offices in Claremore, Tulsa and Broken Arrow joined together to raise funds for the Baker Hughes Race Team, with successful results.
“The team was our largest so far, with a total of 60 registered race members,” Walck said. 
“We have raised a total of $4,171.20 and the fundraising doesn’t end until Oct. 31.”
Race day is Saturday in Tulsa, but Thursday’s balloon release marked the company’s participation and honored the lives of those dealing with breast cancer.
“We believe that integrity is the foundation of our individual and corporate actions — this drives our organization and makes us responsible corporate citizens,” said Wade Wellborn, vice-president, Artificial Lift Systems, Baker Hughes.  
“We’re committed to the health and safety of our employees, friends and neighbors. With more than 59,000 employees worldwide, we recognize that being a good neighbor also means being responsive to the social needs of our community,” he said.
“Baker Hughes has been a proud sponsor of the Susan G. Komen Foundation for many years. In fact, Baker Hughes stepped up this year to become a global sponsor of the organization, donating $100,000 to help eradicate breast cancer.
“Together, we are helping to make a difference in the lives of those affected by this disease, hoping that one day no one will suffer from breast cancer,” he said. 
“I’m so proud to see our employees recognize their friends, family, and loved ones who have been affected by breast cancer with this special balloon launch.”
