Council approves preparation of new Holiday Inn Express

CLAREMORE —

Claremore looks to pick up a spare with action Monday to approve plans for a Holiday Inn Express to be built where the city’s former bowling alley was located at 1400 S. Country Club Rd.
Tulsa’s Promise Hotels has purchased the three-acre lot for the hotel.
Plans include the building of a convention room for use by the city for meetings, annual banquets and weddings. Council members will meet with a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) Board to discuss creation of the convention room using a TIF district.
TIFs use anticipated gains in taxes to finance improvements or other needed infrastructure, attracting businesses that will pay those taxes.
Once an infrastructure is built and business comes, designated taxes in the TIF district are used to pay off the bonds.
“With the conference center, our objective is to serve the community and we’re really anxious and excited about that,” said CEO/President of Promise Hotels Paresh Patel.
He said the facility will house 400-500 people.
Promise Hotels currently operates the Comfort Inn in Claremore, which Patel said is doing very well.
“With all of the events in Claremore, we’ve had to send people to other communities because we just don’t have the capacity,” said Mayor Mickey Perry. “This (hotel) is really going to fill a void.”
The next step for council members is to refer the hotel project to the Claremore Local Develop Act Review Committee for direction and preparation of a project plan. The Planning Commission will then consider the proposed project plan and make any recommendations required by law.
Patel said the four-story Holiday Inn Express will redevelop the “sore” building that currently sits across the street from Claremore Cinema 8, revitalizing the whole area.
“We’re looking to break ground by the end of the year and hopefully open by the end of 2014,” he said.
