PetSmart opening in 3 weeks

ENID, Okla. — The final announced piece of the multi-tenant Enid Crossing shopping center is scheduled to start business next month.

PetSmart’s grand opening is Jan. 18, a spokesperson said Thursday.

The pet product and service store is the third business so far inside the structure at Oakwood and Garriott, following Rue21 and the first store to open its doors, T.J. Maxx.

The building formerly was a Homeland, but sat empty for almost eight years after the grocery store moved out. The city of Enid bought it a couple of years ago and pushed to find a buyer. Finally, Hunt Properties of Dallas closed the more-than $1.75 million deal in June.

T.J. Maxx opened last month, which triggered an incentive allowing Hunt to receive 1 percent of every sales tax dollar collected by the businesses Hunt Properties recruited.

The incentive deal expires in 15 years or whenever Hunt receives $950,000, whichever comes first. City officials have said they expect the cap to be reached within six or seven years.

An early rendering of the property showed what could be enough room for a fourth tenant, but the space would be located in the rear of the building. A representative from Hunt Properties was not available Thursday to speak about plans for the building.

PetSmart is a retailer with stores in the U.S. and Canada. Enid’s grand opening is one of 10 scheduled through March.

The local store will offer pet grooming and training services most days of the week. PetSmart is closed on Wednesdays, and training lessons also will not be available on Tuesdays, according to the corporate website.

PetSmart also offers adoption services through a network of animal welfare groups.

Some PetSmart locations include a Banfield Pet Hospital. The company said there are no plans for one in Enid.

On Thursday, the inside of the store awaited finishing, with empty shelves and incomplete cashier islands.

The store is hiring, and there currently are 14 job functions available for those who apply, including cashier, bather, stocker, associate, training instructor and several manager positions.
