Tri-State Music Festival starts on Wednesday

ENID, Okla. — The 2014 Tri-State Music Festival will kick off Wednesday with the Elementary Honor Band Concert at the Enid High School Auditorium.

This year’s activities are a little different, though; on the second day of Tri-State, garage bands will perform at the downtown Square Gazebo. If there is inclement weather, it will be moved to Hiland Tower.

Tri-State General Manager Debbie Lambert said this is the first time the music gala will have garage bands made up of school students.

Another new event, the drum line competition, will be Friday at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.

Organization, solo and ensemble contests will be daily 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. at various locations around the city.

The garage band and drum line events are free and open to the public. Those who want to see the honor band concert on Wednesday can pay $2 to get in.

Tickets for the Friday Grand Concert at Convention Hall are $3.

This year marks a big change in the Tri-State schedule of events. As reported earlier, there will be no Saturday contests or performances. Both the Grand Concert and the Tri-State Parade used to be held on the weekend. For the 82nd iteration of the festival, they will be this Friday.

The carnival will set up at Oakwood Mall.

Because of downtown construction, the parade will start at the intersection of Washington and Maine. It then will proceed east to Grand.

Lambert said she expects about 9,500 musicians in Enid this week. There are more schools than last year registered to show up. Saturday events were eliminated because there were too many scheduling conflicts, Lambert previously told the News & Eagle. Only about a third of the bands would stay for the street marching event.

“That way, bands don’t have to drive back. They’ll be in town on Friday, and they can stay and march,” Lambert said.
