ENID, Okla. —
A 26-year-old Garfield County Detention Facility inmate who was found unresponsive in his cell died Wednesday night at an area hospital.
Sheriff Jerry Niles said the inmate was found unresponsive in his cell at 3:05 p.m. by other inmate, who alerted jail staff. CPR was initiated by both inmates and jail staff, and the man was taken by ambulance to an area hospital. He was pronounced dead about 9:40 p.m.
“We have notified the state jail inspector’s office, the county commissioner’s office and the district attorney’s office,” Niles said, “which is done by our protocol.”
Niles said the man, whose name was not being released, was incarcerated for failing to appear on misdemeanor charges.
The sheriff said the inmate was in a common area with other inmates before he left to go into his cell. After a period of time, an inmate went to check on the man and found him unresponsive.
Niles said his office was investigating the death and the medical examiner’s office would determine the cause of death.
