A line stolen from one of my favorite classic movies, but apropos for the rocky-road beginnings of this year’s Board of County Commissioners. On the heels of the Baldridge indictments, the current Board promised a new era in county government. Jan. 8 they added prayer to the agenda, led by District 2 Commissioner Mike Helm. For the first time in decades, a Republican majority made up the Board. “Times, they are a changing...” seemed to be the lyrics of this new administration. Then.... NOT. Enter the now infamous Rib Crib affair, the first in a two-step dance around open meeting law. Next came closed-door sessions with a drug-testing rep and slippery answers from the commissioners involved. By this time, I was considering writing a column comparing the trio to the three stooges except I couldn’t figure out which was Curly and which was Larry... (Moe, the one who thinks he’s smarter than the others but somehow gets into the most trouble, seemed obvious.) Well, never mind. No more stooges. No more dances around the truth because they got caught in a compromising situation. (At least, not lately.) No more ignorance regarding the importance of open meeting and open record laws. A new agenda item allows for responsible, controlled, public input. Something the Board doesn’t HAVE to do, but chooses to allow for the sake of democracy.
