The Great Easter Egg Hunt

Tom Fink

In a now-faded picture somewhere in the disordered photograph library of my study, a grinning, semi-toothless eight-year old version of myself stands in his plaid Easter best, clutching a store-bought Easter basket — containing (from what I can recall) a chocolate bunny, a coloring book, Easter eggs and Easter grass.

Mostly Easter grass, actually. I think we used it to insulate our house that year, but I digress ...

Were the same picture taken today, the basket contents would be more or less the same, although the Easter eggs would probably be shaped a lot like DVDs.

That’s because they would be DVDs — the Easter egg packages of the 21st century.

In a nutshell, or for the occasion, eggshell, an “Easter egg” is essentially a hidden message or feature in an object such as a movie, book, CD, DVD, computer program, or video game — the term is (obviously) parallels annual Easter egg hunts, only without the chocolaty payoff.

While I hope traditional Easter egg hunts are never a thing of the past, I’m a huge fan of the virtual Easter egg hunts, and there are more of them out there than a decade’s worth of egg hunts on College Hill.

Just a few examples of the hidden goodies in popular culture and even historically are:

•Mona Lisa the stripper.

When Da Vinci painted the “Mona Lisa,” it’s said that he painter her naked first, then painted over another coat with clothes on.

Whether this was a technique he used to represent the human body more realistically or he just wanted to give her a reason to smile, I can only hope he didn’t use this same approach when he painted “The Last Supper.”

•Adam and the brain.

On the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican in Rome, the center of the ceiling is “Creation of Adam.” The figure on the right who represents God has a red robe flowing around him and angels surrounding him — this is actually a cross section view of a human brain. The robe forms the outer limit and the feet of God and the angels form the spinal cord. On behalf of everyone, I’d just like to say, “Ewwww.”
