Wednesday was the final day for Westside Elementary students to collect food items for the school’s annual Thanksgiving food drive for Westside families in need.
The Westside PTO committe organized the drive, gathering a total of 1,377 items of food.
“We’re very happy with the turnout,” said school counselor Jennifer Crum. “The PTO committee did a call out to remind parents that we were doing a food drive and then they could contact me if they were in need of a food basket. Parents come and pick up the baskets at Westside the week of Thanksgiving. A combination of teachers and PTO members will take the baskets of food to the recipients as they pull up.”
Baskets will be distributed to parents Monday and Tuesday at Westside Elementary.
Westside Elementary Secretary Kimberleigh Bickford said teachers would like to especially thank PTO members Tracie Hardage and Krista Merriman, who handled the organization of the food drive. For nearly a month, students from each grade level collected the items which were stacked in the school cafeteria in front of a cut out turkey. Each class was asked to collectively submit a name for the turkey mascot. The winning name would earn the class an ice cream party. Second grade teacher Tessa Rodriguez’s class earned the party for their name Mr. Puff n’ Stuff.
