Former Claremore resident killed in Marietta

CLAREMORE —

A former Claremore resident died Monday in southern  Oklahoma, when he was struck by a vehicle as he crossed the highway.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s report, Marietta resident Dr. Vergil Smith, 82, was struck by a vehicle while crossing the highway to retrieve the mail Monday att his rural home in Marietta.
Dr. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene on SH 32, three miles west of Marietta in Love County.
Smith was struck by a 2013 Ford, driven by 36-year-old Troy Hooper of Duncan. 
Hooper, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, was not injured. The cause of the accident currently remains under investigation.
According to Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home of Marietta, Dr. Smith was killed one day short of what would have been his 83rd birthday. He still worked at Mercy Health Love County Hospital and at the Rural Health Clinic, also in Love County.
His sister, Judy Eagleton still resides in Claremore.
Funeral services are pending through Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home of Marietta.
