Special to the Progress
The author of “I Called Him Uncle Will.” Doris “Coke” Meyer will be the guest speaker at the annual book review sponsored by Chapter BM P.E.O. The book review will be at First United Methodist Church Family Life Center, 1615 N. Hwy. 88 on Friday, March 7, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. Tickets are currently on sale for $10 per person.
Meyer is the great- niece of Will Rogers, and can relate stories of her uncle in ways other historians do not. Ms. Meyer was 15 years old when the news came that her Uncle Will and Wiley Post had been killed in a plane crash in Barrow, Alaska. Prior to this event, Coke Meyer had been at family dinners with Uncle Will when he told them of his travels, and shared his humor and his jokes, and they sang along with him at the piano. Others have written the story of Will Rogers as a Broadway star, a newspaper columnist, a friend of politicians, and a radio commentator. But Coke Meyer knew Will Rogers as Uncle Will, the man who did not act like a star or a celebrity when he was with his Oklahoma family. Copies of her book will be for sale.
Andy Hogan will also be part of the program. Tickets for the book review are $10 per person. Refreshments will be provided. Proceeds from this event provide higher education scholarships for women. Tickets may be purchased from any Chapter BM P.E.O. member or by calling (918) 630-4884.
