The Claremore High School Marching Band began “Early Band Camp” Monday morning as students prepare for the upcoming season.
Students will practice from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. every weekday until the beginning of school on Aug. 15. Marching band requires a student to play a medley of three to four songs while maintaining instrument position and posture, said Susan O’Dell, past vice president and president for Claremore Band Boosters.
“It is mind-boggling to think that these students memorize thousands of notes and over 110 field positions per person just to perform a 10-minute show,” said O’Dell.  Rehearsals are physical and intense. Students layer each note until the entire show comes together.
O’Dell said every note must be memorized, every step must be placed with confidence and every formation hit with precision.
“We expect a lot from these students, but they are a dedicated group of kids who aren’t afraid of hard work needed to create excellence on the field,” said Head Band Director Kevin Couch. “We want to be our best and these kids are showing me that they are committed to that goal. I’m excited about what this band can accomplish.”
The CHS Marching Band will perform at the Zebra’s first home football game on Sept. 5 at Lantow Field.
