Police search for suspects posing as city employees in credit card theft

Claremore police are searching for suspects involved in two stolen credit card cases Tuesday afternoon.

The cards were stolen from neighborhood homes on Sunset Drive and the 300 block of E. 15th Street.

The two men were able to enter the residents’ homes by posing as city employees, said Claremore Police Chief Stan Brown.

He said in the first reported case, one of the suspects convinced the elderly person to head to the backyard with him to sort out a problem. This is when the other man entered the house and stole the credit card.

The second report described two men posing as  city employees who needed to check the resident’s waterline pressure. They entered the house and one of them went to the bathroom, ran the water and flushed the toilet, said Brown.

“The (suspect) said he needed money for chemicals to fix the problem. The victim paid the man with cash and then left her purse to follow the other man into a seperate room to check another problem. After both men were gone, she realized her purse had been dumped and taken,” said Brown.

One of the suspects is described as a tall, slendor white male, clean cut, between 40- and 45-years-old. The other is described as a white male with a scraggly beard. The two have been seen possibly driving a beige four-door Chevrolet car.

“Investigators are checking with credit card companies for possible use, and we have extra patrol units searching neighborhoods,” said Brown.

He said he strongly encourages everyone, particularly the elderly to be aware of the issue.

“If someone knocks on the front door and looks to be a city employee, ask to see proper ID. They will not hesitate to show it,” said Brown. “Anyone with questions can call 911 and have an officer come out.”

For non-emergency questions or information call the Claremore Police Department at (918) 341-1212.
