Lesson in humility

We try to work with our kids’ self esteem at Hope Harbor. I used to keep a few golf clubs in my office and take some of the teens out and let them hit a few practice shots. I put the golf clubs away the other day. If there was ever a sport that destroys self esteem, it’s golf. When you slice one into the next fairway, you can call it a “mulligan” and seven witnesses will allow you that. Hit just one good shot off the tee box and no one will be around to see it. In my case, I called a mulligan off the first tee. Then, dropped two balls into the lake on the second tee. Now, I’m under no delusions as to my golf game. I carry a ball retriever, so I stepped to the water’s edge to retrieve my errant shots. That’s when my slick shoes gave way and I fell into the lake. Twice. Before witnesses. Gordon’s golf club is a great place, and I plan to go there often. It’s beautiful there and not too challenging for a duffer like me. But it’s a compact course, and when you fall in the lake, there will be lots of witnesses.

I’m a guy, so I “cowboyed” it up and played the rest of my nine. Then, as I made my way back to the truck with my muddy pants, I noticed that I was behind two ladies. Great. I tried ducking under the cedar trees to the far side of my pickup, but they must have seen me and hung around long enough for me to walk in front of them to climb into the cab. So much for dignity and self esteem. Oh, yes. There is something else we try to teach the kids out at Hope Harbor. Humility. Some of us need it. Especially middle aged men like me who think they can still look good swinging a club. Maybe I’ll take some of those kids golfing after all.
