BENCH SITTIN' — Never too early to think about 2010

The November 2010 elections are 16 months away and the waters are rippling with individuals positioning themselves to run for state office.

Rep. Tad Jones (R) is term limited and there are several locals who are considering a run for the District 9 House seat.

Only one candidate has formally announced, Eric Cullen, (D), owner of an investigation security consulting firm. Cullen is making his first dive into the political system.

On Tuesday, Oklahoma Speaker of the House Chris Benge (R) was the featured speaker at the Claremore Rotary. Introducing him was Rotarian of the Day Marty Quinn, who some think might be considering a run to replace Jones.

In the audience listening to Benge’s remarks were Cullen and Claremore Mayor Brent Shallenberger (D), who could be a likely candidate for the District 9 seat.

The filing period for state offices isn’t until next year, so the political horizon could change by the time candidates have to make their decision to file.

In the meantime, it’s never too early to begin securing support and financial commitments. Between now and early next year, it is also time for these that may be considering a run for the District 9 seat to clearly formulate where they stand on key issues that impact Rogers County voters.
