The great state fair

OKLAHOMA CITY — If you’ve lived in Oklahoma very long you know that each September brings a great Oklahoma tradition: the Great State Fair of Oklahoma.

With around 180 various events each year, families from across the world make a special trip to the 435 acres of State Fair Park in Oklahoma City to experience this family favorite that celebrates the lifetime of our state.
The first state fair dates back to one month prior to Oklahoma becoming the United States’ 46th state, ushering in a sense of community and vision for this to-be state.  And it has not let up since.
The Oklahoma State Fair has been ranked one of the best state fairs in North America.  With a focus on agriculture, education, entertainment and fun, the State Fair remains an Oklahoma staple that showcases our state’s history and opportunity.  Whether you come for the funnel cakes and corndogs, or the rides, shows and entertainment, the state fair is a family friendly environment that has something for everyone.
My family looks forward to the time every year we get to go and try out our favorite things. Our kids love throwing darts at balloons, my wife always gets a fresh lemonade and I opt for the root beer.
Learning opportunities abound for all ages.  Livestock and horse shows are ongoing as well as creative art events, with more than 30,000 rosettes and ribbons ordered each year for competitors.  In the creative art events, classic fan favorites like baking and photography still exist but new events like a salsa contest and duct tape creations have been added.
The 2012 State Fair runs until Sept. 23, so be sure to visit okstatefair.com to make your list of all you want to see and do.
You can also volunteer your time each year in continuing to make this event great.  Following the conclusion of the Oklahoma State Fair, we shift gears to the Tulsa State Fair which runs from September 27-October 7.  More details can be found at tulsastatefair.com.  Plan your trip today.
As always, my office is open and ready to assist you in any way we can. I am excited to hear your ideas on how we can increase economic development across the state.  Feel free to visit our website at www.ok.gov/ltgovernor, find us on Facebook and Twitter (@LtGovToddLamb) or call our office at 405.521.2161.
