Elizabeth Rose Barber Smith

CLAREMORE — Elizabeth Rose Barber Smith went home to be with her Lord on the evening of Sept. 30 at the age of 91. At the time of her passing she was surrounded by her children and loved ones.

Elizabeth was born to Frances and George Barber in Westville, Okla. in 1921, preceded by a brother, George Walburn, she was the eldest of four daughters; Winifred Sue, Sally Marie and Barbara Ann.

Although Elizabeth’s grandparents and parents moved frequently, their professional endeavors have been notable. Her Grandfather, John Henry Edwards, is credited with locating the first shallow oil well in Rogers County as well as one in Glenpool. Her father was a landscape architect and was instrumental in designing Woodward Park and the Tulsa Rose Garden. Her mother, Frances, was among the first graduating class to proudly have their commencement exercise held in the newly refurbished First Baptist Church here in Claremore.

Having served her country during WWII, Mrs. Smith took advantage of her eligibility to enter the Claremore Veteran’s Center four years ago and quickly endeared herself to staff members and was fondly referred to as “Miss Elizabeth”.  She continued her joyous hobby of designing jewelry during her time there and she daily endeavored to find beauty in everything around her and encouraged others to do the same, especially within themselves.  This was a gift and strength she possessed throughout her lifetime and many left her presence feeling blessed.

Elizabeth is survived by her children; daughter Susan Cunningham and husband Jerry of Claremore; daughter Bonnie Hauke and husband Kevin of Marco Island, Florida; son Larry Smith and wife Brenda of Temple, Texas; grandchildren Richard Wayne, Timothy Keith, John Henry, Daniel Shane, Heather Elizabeth, Katelyn Marie, Lauren Elizabeth, and great grandchildren (who referred to her as “Greatmommy”) Erica Diane, Brittany Lee, Bryce Thomas, Katelyn MacKenzie, Chloe Elise, Blake Richard, Maya MacKenzie,  Wiley Everett and....born just hours before her death, a great-great grandson, Bennett Lee - officially making Elizabeth a “Great-Great Mommy”.

Memorial service for Elizabeth will be held at Calvary Free Will Baptist Church at  1921 Holly Road in Claremore on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 11 a.m.  Pastor Tom Schulze will officiate.
