Commissioners approve Mullin’s courthouse use for 2014

CLAREMORE —

In a meeting marked with uncharacteristic brevity, Rogers County Commissioners approved Monday the use of the courthouse for Congressman Markwayne Mullin’s office to host weekly meetings.
“Congressman Mullin’s office contacted us, as they’re wanting to close out their regular office, and use our facility for their weekly meetings,” said District 3 Commissioner Kirt Thacker. “What they do is host (weekly) meetings to discuss various public issues, and they’ve requested the use of our multi-purpose (meeting) room once a week to conduct these meetings. They have field reps who oversee these meetings, and sometimes the congressman himself is in attendance, but they’re wanting a place (for the meetings) which will save them some money on the federal side for the cost of an office.”
Thacker noted Mullin’s request to the county was not to allow him to have an office in the courthouse, but merely to use its facilities for his weekly meetings, typically 9-11:30 a.m. Wednesdays.
Commissioner Dan DeLozier motioned to approve the request with   Thacker making a second  and the request was passed in a unanimous vote.
Following Mullin’s 2012 election, he established one of his district offices at Claremore City Hall, where it remained open for a year at a cost of $10 a month to lease from the city.
Mullin’s weekly meetings at the courthouse will begin the first Wednesday in 2014.
In other actions, Commissioners:
• Approved the appointment of Johnny Messimore to the City of Claremore- Rogers County Planning Commission.
“(Planning Commission member) Arlin Vancuren recently resigned and we feel Mr. Messimore would be a suitable successor to his seat on the commission,” began  District 2 Commissioner Mike Helm. “Arlin stepped down as his business is growing to the extent that he didn’t feel he could give the position the attention which it required.
