City voters extend 1-cent sales tax


Claremore’s one-cent sales tax has been extended another six years.
Citizens voted Tuesday in favor of the renewal, 460 to 161 votes, according to unofficial results. The measure passed with  74.1 percent in favor of the sales tax. 
Revenues from the tax are divided four ways, with 40 percent going to capital improvements and 20 percent each to the Police, Fire, and Parks and Recreation departments.
A total of $3.5 million is collected from the one-cent annually, according to City Manager Jim Thomas, with the three departments receiving about $650,000 each. 
Thomas said that the tax is crucial in order for the city to “provide the services that Claremore residents have come to expect.”
The one-cent sales tax was first implemented in 1972 and has been renewed every six years since.  
It now will remain in place until July 1, 2020.
The Police, Fire, and Parks and Recreation departments use their percentages primarily for operational and maintenance expenses.
The 40 percent for capital improvements funds larger purchases and projects throughout the city, such as police cars, fire trucks, safety equipment, and things like HVAC units, computer system upgrades and more. 
A few years ago, the Animal Control building was funded in large part with capital improvement dollars, according to Police Chief Stan Brown. 
Fire Chief Sean Douglas said his department will be looking at purchasing a couple of new fire trucks in the coming years.
