The Claremore Police Department will participate in the annual “Click It or Ticket” mobilization set for Monday through June 2.
During this time, CPD officers will be cracking down on drivers and passengers who do not have their seat belts buckled.
“With the current road closures due to the J.M. Davis widening project, our goal is not to disrupt traffic flow anymore than it is,” said Claremore Police Chief Stan Brown. “However, we will take advantage of the construction and use traffic issues as observation points to make sure drivers and passengers are wearing their seat belts.”
Brown said with more drivers out and about during the summer, destructive driving increases significantly.
“In Claremore, history has shown that vehicle accidents don’t necessarily increase during the summer season, but aggresive driving does. With the upcoming road construction, drivers should actively watch for this behavior and always remember to buckle up.”
According to information from the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office (OHSO) state law requires drivers and front seat passengers age 13 to be properly fastened while in an operated vehicle. Children ages 12 and younger are required to be properly restrained in the appropriate car seat, booster seat or seat belt, according to the child’s age and weight. The nationwide campaign will last through the Memorial Day holiday weekend, when numerous motorists are on the roads. According to OHSO 696 people died on Oklahoma roadways in 2011.
Of these deaths, 491 required restraint use.
Out of the 491 deaths, 58.2 percent were not restrained and nearly 54 percent of unrestrained fatalities were ejected from the vehicle.
“We can’t make the decision to buckle up for you, and we hope it won’t take getting a ticket to help you remember to fasten that seat belt or buckle your child correctly,” said Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lt. Ben Crockett. “Unless you want to risk a ticket - or, even worse, your life - you must buckle up.”
