County hosts disaster training

CLAREMORE —

The Tulsa Port of Catoosa and Rogers County residents hosted several Green Country emergency agencies this week as the teams participated in a three-day training session for large-scale disasters.
The goal is to simulate a real-life scenario large-scale disaster in an effort to train and coordinate the response of the different agencies, according to Rogers County Emergency Management Director Scotty Stokes.
Tulsa Police, Fire and Bomb Squad, along with the Verdigris Fire Department, Claremore Fire Department and Rogers County Emergency Management participated in the event.
The Oklahoma National Guard also provided assistance and coordinated the mock scenario and response drill.
Other agencies including Oklahoma Emergency Management, FBI and TSA officials provided assistance during segments of the event.
Rogers County is required to participate in a large-scale disaster exercise each year, and often the events are necessary for grant participation, he added.
Stokes said if a real disaster were to occur in Rogers County he would serve to facilitate supplies and agency cooperation.
“Getting these groups together [for training] helps so they know how to work together if a disaster occurs,” Stokes said.
The disaster training featured a scenario leading emergency personnel to several different locations and requiring them to deal with different aspects of an investigation.
For example, the exercise began at the Tulsa Port of Catoosa with a theft of material from railway cars and lead to a large scale investigation involving possible explosive devices.
Tactical training is provided giving the participating agencies the edge if a similar situation would occur, according to Stokes.
The teams use state-of-the-art equipment during the event making it as realistic as possible, he added.
