Oologah-Talala Emergency Medical Services Director Kelly Deal was named Rogers County’s interim Emergency Management Director Monday by the Rogers County Commissioners.
Deal volunteered to help the county until a permanent replacement for former director Bob Anderson could be found.
The commissioners approved Deal for one week, giving him full access to county equipment and supplies. Last week, Anderson was terminated by commissioners. No cause was cited by commissioners, who voted unanimously to fire Anderson.
Commissioner Kirt Thacker brought forward the item under new business, as it was not listed on the meeting’s agenda.
“Factually, it is my understanding that Friday a proposal was made after the agenda was posted,” said Assistant District Attorney David Iski.
The item would qualify as new business, Iski added.
“What I propose is that we install him as interim director for one week,” Thacker said.
Deal presented credentials to the board as part of the process.
“Are you willing to take the position for the first week anyway?” asked Thacker.
Deal agreed that he would be serving as a volunteer during his own time.
“He will have full access to the office,” said Thacker.
Deal has been working with OTEMS for a number of years, and has a working relationship with Rogers County.
Thacker outlined the need to fill the position to insure preparedness in case of an emergency situation.
In light of the board’s decision, area resident Janet Gray came forward during the meeting to speak to the board about the termination of Anderson.
“I would like the reconsideration, reinstatement of his job,” Gray said. “Bob has done and excellent job and has protected Rogers County Citizens.”
Gray’s response is similar to the numerous comments that have been posted on social media websites during the past week.
The position is scheduled to be formally posted Monday one week after the termination of Anderson.
