Registration deadline for 1-Cent Tax Friday

CLAREMORE —

The last day for Rogers County residents to register to vote in the upcoming One-Cent Sales Tax Election is Friday.
The election is set for Aug. 13 and was called after a mistake was made in the publication of the previously approved One-Cent Sales Tax earlier this year. The Board of County Commissioners voted at a special meeting June 6 to have the new election, hiring outside legal council attorney Paul Johanning to oversee the details.
The new election will cost voters approximately $55,000, including Johanning’s fee for services.
Previously, the offices of the county clerk and district attorney worked with the county commissioners to oversee the election process.
Other changes to the August election include: a new ballot requesting a division of the tax.
The ballot states for Rogers County to “renew, levy, impose and collect a sales tax of 1 percent upon the gross proceeds or gross receipts derived from all sales or services.”
The  proceeds are “solely for the construction, improvement, maintenance and repair of county roads and bridges and 12.5 percent of the proceeds to pay the judgment in the Material Service Corporation case.”
If approved, the tax will last for five years beginning Oct. 1.
Residents seeking to participate in the upcoming election must be registered to vote prior to the Friday deadline.
“Persons who are United States citizens, residents of Oklahoma, and at least 18 years old may apply to become registered voters,” saod Rogers County Election Board Secretary Julie Dermody.
Persons who have never been registered to vote before or who are not currently registered in the county of their residence and persons who are registered but who need to change their registration information may apply by filling out and mailing an Oklahoma Voter Registration Application form in time for it to be postmarked no later than midnight July 19, she added.
