Sequoyah soars past Sperry on Homecoming

SEQUOYAH — Claremore Sequoyah opened District 3A-5 play with a 38-7 homecoming victory over Sperry Friday night at the Pope Sports Complex.

The Eagles (3-1, 1-0) host traditional power Seminole in their final non-district contest on Friday. Sequoyah then returns to district action the following Friday with a third consecutive home game, against Blackwell.

"It was a total effort tonight," said Sequoyah head coach Jody Iams. "I thought everyone played well.  I am very proud of them."

The Eagle defense held the Pirates (0-4, 0-1) without a first down and -18 yards total offense in the first half.

"I thought we did a great job against the pass and also didn't give many yards up front," said Iams.  "That's how you always like to do it."

Sequoyah scored on its opening possession, courtesy of a Michael Chambers 5-yard touchdown run at the 6:28 mark of the first quarter.

Ryan Henson made it 14-0 after he returned a fumble 10 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the first period.

The lead grew to 21-0 when Chambers scored on a 2-yard plunge with 9:34 remaining in the second quarter.

McKaine Foster set up that touchdown after he interecepted a pass at the Sperry 26 yard line two minutes earlier.

Sequoyah scored ten quick points in the final minute of the first half.  Sam Lederman made it 24-0 after he was good on a 40 yard field try with 42 seconds left.

Benny Sandecki then connected with Tanner Ortery on a 17-yard scoring strike, 18 seconds later.  That touchdown came two plays after Kyle Cuttsinger intercepted a pass at the Pirate 30 yard line.

Chambers scored on a 59-yard touchdown run at the 9:50 mark of the third period to make it 38-0.

"Chambers is a good kid and one of the hardest workers on the team,"  said Iams.  "It was fun to see him have such a good game."

Sperry avoided the shutout when Nate Torix scored on a 9-yard run with 6:06 to play.

  • Chouteau rallies past Chelsea, 30-20

You just kind of had that feeling that things were going to be different this year for Chouteau football.

Down 20-14 heading into the fourth quarter, Chouteau scored 16 unanswered points to secure a 30-20 win over Chelsea on their homecoming night. The win finally sheds a monkey off the backs of the Wildcats as it was their first district win since 2007.
