City groups searching for identity
By TOM FINK
There are certain entities that are inseparable from the mottos they represent — the Army has “Be all that you can be,” the Boy Scouts have “Be Prepared,” and the three Musketeers had “One for all and all for one.”
City leaders are hoping that Claremore can soon have a motto, slogan or “brand” all its own, one that encompasses the spirit of Claremore and the positive attitudes of its citizens.
“We’ve got numerous entities within the City — the Chamber of Commerce, the City of Claremore, the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, etc. — each of them with its own distinct way of promoting itself, with a logo or trademark,” said Matt Mueller, assistant city manager. “The CVB’s slogan is ‘Spirit of the West,’ the Chamber and the City share the logo of ‘Claremore’ with an exclamation point, in a particular font and with what looks like a paintbrush stroke beneath the ‘more’, and so on.
”What we’d like is to develop a slogan or brand that best represents Claremore, so that all these different groups will have one brand to signify what’s great about our city.”
City leaders have met twice in discussion-only sessions to brainstorm potential ideas.
“At our most recent meeting, Mandy Vavrinak with Crossroads Communications volunteered to help with the proceedings,” Mueller said. “Mandy’s already working with (City Economic Developer) Rickey Hayes and employed with the city in that capacity. She volunteered to facilitate the meetings as part of her existing relation with the city, to help move them along and make the meetings run more smoothly.”
Although Mueller said “no concrete ideas” have come from the meetings yet, Vavrinak will be reviewing her notes from the most recent meetings to cull several potential “taglines” to be used in association with Claremore.
“Once we have some different ideas to choose from, we’ll present them to the Council and the various boards — the Chamber, Claremore Main Street, the CVB, CIEDA — for their input,” Mueller said. “We’re hoping to agree upon a slogan or logo that’s distinctly Claremore — one that honors the City’s history but also is indicative of the progressive attitudes of its citizens.”
Mueller said the focus groups are planning for a July launch date of the slogan, brand or motto.
