Murder weapon still missing

Affidavit: Jones tells police he would be killed if he talked

DUNCAN —

After Michael Dewayne Jones was arrested Friday for the first degree murder of Australian Christopher Lane, he told a Duncan investigator that if he talked he would be killed, according to the affidavit filed in his case.
On Tuesday, Jones, 17, was not charged with first degree murder but was charged with use of a vehicle in the discharge of a weapon and accessory to murder after the fact. He was driving the car Friday that was used in the murder of Lane. With Jones were Chancey Allen Luna, 16, and James Edwards, 15, who both face first-degree murder charges. They also appeared in Stephens County District Court Tuesday.
An hour after the three boys had been taken to the Stephens County Jail, Jones told a jailer he wanted to talk with Lt. Joe Shoemake. Jones was taken to the interview room of the sheriff’s office and then told he didn’t want to talk but wanted to know if his father and a lawyer showed up, would someone at the police department talk to him.
According to the affidavit, Shoemake said he Jones wasn’t going to talk, he would take him back to the cell. Jones said he couldn’t tell the detective who shot Lane because if he did, “he would get killed.”
As Jones was being escorted back to his cell, Shoemake talked to him and said they needed to find the gun so a child wouldn’t find it and get hurt. Jones told him that the gun had been given to someone else.
“Someone that had two brothers inside the jail,” Jones said, according to the affidavit.
Shoemake said that could be a lot of people.
Jones, according to the affidavit, responded, “He has two brothers in here for armed robbery.”
At that point, Shoemake indicated it was an individual in the community and Jones said, “I did not say that.”
