CLAREMORE — This year, every school in the Claremore district is focusing on a word and quote of the month.

Stuart Roosa Elementary Principal Glen Abshere said he helped organize a committee of teachers over the summer to determine which words would be used each month.

“The idea originated several years ago by Claremore teachers Tommy Nolan and Fielding Elseman. They both shared the idea with the elementary school principals for their students and overtime the whole district became involved,” said Abshere. “The goal is to soon have businesses get behind the idea and display the word and/or quote on their marquees for more of the community to see.

He said the word and quote of the month are also inserted into classroom lessons.

“Our teachers do a really good job of including them in their everyday lessons. Roosa and Catalayah Elementary also include both in their Rise and Shine ceremonies. A certain student is chosen for each day to give the definition of the word and give an example of the quote,” said Abshere.

Westside Elementary Principal Traci Thomas said all of the teachers incorporate the word and quote of month into their curriculum differently, but in creative ways.
