CLAREMORE —

A filming of ABC network’s television show “Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition” took place Tuesday at Elite Gymnastics and Cheer in Owasso.
Extreme Weight Loss contestant and Owasso resident Georgeanna Johnson has been working with Elite coaches Greg Baldridge and Natalya Nikitina for more than two months to regain her skills as a gymnast.
Included in the TV show are three different milestones that contestants go through. As part of her sixth-month milestone, Johnson attempted the beam, floor and vault events. After each event, she was scored by guest judges and Olympic Gold Medal gymnasts Shannon Miller, Bart Conner and Dominique Dawes. The milestone was filmed in front of nearly 500 audience members at the gym and will be aired on ABC sometime in late spring.
Johnson had been working with Baldridge to accomplish one of her goals, a back handspring, while Nikitina helped her create a floor routine for the meet, said Teresa Piper, owner of Elite Gymnastics and Cheer.
“This is a huge part of (Johnson’s) journey to extreme weight loss, and so the producers of the show decided to run it like a gymnastics meet,” said Piper. “This whole experience just kind of fell into our laps, and began when Georgeanna called our office in need of some coaching. It was a good fit because she’s able to be close to friends and family during this part of her journey.”
Johnson competed in gymnastics until she was in ninth grade. One of her favorite gymnasts growing up was Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci, winner of three gold medals and the first gymnast to score a perfect 10 in the history of the sport. Comaneci was in attendance Tuesday to mentor Johnson during her weight loss milestone.
