The fifth annual Daisy BB Gun Day at the J.M. Davis Arms and Historical Museum in Claremore will be Saturday. Children and youths through the age of 18 may participate free of charge for the event. Adults may shoot for a three dollar charge.
Shooters will be divided into three categories; children through age 12; age 13 to 18 and adult division. Each division winner will receive a custom made Daisy BB rifle.
The gallery and competition begins at 10 a.m. and continues to 3 p.m.
“This event has grown each year,” said Wayne McCombs, J.M. Davis Museum executive director. “Participants and their parents have come from this four state area. In fact, we have had one champion in 2011 from Louisiana.”
New to the event this year will be the Tri-State Gunfighters and Reenactors.
“The kids and the kids at heart will really enjoy this group”, McCombs said. Their schedule includes a “Cowboy 21 Gun Salute” to open the day at 10 a.m. followed by a Shoot-Out at High Noon and a Gun Fight and Robbery at 2:00 pm. “They will be looking for kids to be “deputized.”
The Friends of the J.M. Davis Museum, the support group for the Davis Museum purchased the indoor BB shooting range from the Daisy Outdoor Products Company of Rogers, Ark.
The group also takes the shooting gallery to the Claremore Outdoor Expo, Bluegrass and Chili Festival and the Wanemacher Gun and Knife Show in Tulsa.
“Safety and proper use of the BB rifle is emphasized at the event,” stated Jason Schubert, the museum's curator. “All participants from the youngest to adults must wear eye protection and abide by the rules of safe shooting. Everyone who enjoys shooting sports will tell you that they took their first shots with a Daisy BB rifle. We are looking forward to introducing new shooters to the sport.”
In addition to museum staff, members of the Claremore R.O.T.C will assist participants inside the range.
In addition to the shooting event, anyone with an air rifle that wishes to have it evaluated or needs repair may visit with air rifle historian and collector, Jim Dry of Claremore.
