Celebrity Reading Day creates holiday memories for Westside

CLAREMORE — Claremore police officers, doctors, principals and more took time to read holiday-themed books to students during Wednesday’s Celebrity Reading Day at Westside Elementary. Claremore Mayor Mickey Perry, Westside Principal Lou Robertson and Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton were among some of the guest readers.

“This is something we have done for years and the children love it,” said Principal Lou Robertson. “It’s a day for making memories.”
With school parties and other activities, the week before Christmas break can be a hectic and busy time for students.
“These stories allow the children to sit back and unwind but also interact with the readers,” said Robertson. “There’s still a lot of teaching involved which is good for senior citizens who want to volunteer and interact more with the community.”
As part of the festivities, teachers provided holiday crafts and decorations for students to work on.
“Today is great for children in divorced families who change custodies before break,” she said. “It gives parents the opportunity to see what their child is currently working on in school.”
