The Claremore High School Academic Team took second place in the Class 6A  OSSAA Academic Bowl state championship Feb. 15 in El Reno.
For nine consecutive years, Claremore has finished as state champions or runner-up. The team has won the state championship three of the last five years, including one 6A title in 2011.
The Academic Bowl included schools from across Oklahoma with eight members qualifying from each team in each class.
Matches featured 40 questions. An additional 20 questions were given as part of 60-second lightning rounds when members were allowed to confer before answering, said coach Kay Strain.
Strain said students prepared for each tournament by studying and memorizing an “amazing” number of lists on anything from Asian capitols to Shakespeare, to the Trigonometry unit circle.
The team used flash cards and memory tools, spending hours of their own time researching and learning facts and figures.
Team members included Connor Lynch, Andrew Noland, Zane King, Josh Long, Carly Abbott, Truman Burrage, Matt Dalton, Kylie Roberts, Bryanna Hayes and Laural Butler.
