The Claremore City Council will look to fill two openings after the resignation of Ward II Councilor Thomas Cypert and Ward I Councilor Brandon Smith.
Cypert emailed city management prior to the July 1 meeting requesting an immediate resignation, citing business responsibilities. The city council will discuss his resignation at the meeting on Monday.
Smith is planning to formally announce his resignation at that meeting as he plans to pursue opportunities out of state.
“It is with sadness that I must officially make the announcement that many of you knew was coming. Our upcoming move makes it impossible for me to continue my work on city council, and as such I must resign my position as a representative of Ward 1. To allow the council maximum time to fill the position, I will officially make my last day on council Aug. 3. However, my last regularly schedule meeting will be Monday, July 15. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the citizens of Claremore and to serve alongside my fellow council members,” Smith said.
Council members will also discuss and potentially vote on a procedure for soliciting and selecting candidates for the open seats.
The council could set dates to interview potential candidates.
According to the city charter, vacancies on the council can be appointed if a position is vacated during the term of a member.
The new members are required to run for election after the initial appointment.
Citizens must live in the ward where the vacancy occurs to be eligible for the position.
A map of city wards is available on the city website, www.claremorecity.com.
