Korean War veterans received special honors during a commemoration ceremony last Friday at the Claremore Veterans Center.
The Department of Defense 60th Anniversary of the Korean War Anniversary Committee along with the Department of Veteran Affairs paid tribute to the veterans.
Close to 75 veterans from all branches of the military were honored with a certificate of appreciation for their services, including eight veterans who have recently passed.
“The selfless sacrifices of Korean veterans who fought in Korea to ensure the freedom and prosperity we enjoy today must always be remembered,” said Lt. Col. Dennis Snelling. marine liaisaon for the Secretary of Defense. “These patriots halted the tide of communism that threatened to sweep across the Korean peninsula, and today the Republic of Korea stands as a modern, vibrant democracy because of their courage and selfless sacrifice.”
Snelling announced the names of those honored, while Maj. Billy Canedo presented the certificates to the veterans or family members in attendance.
Through the rest of this year, the DOD 60th Anniversary Committee will continue to honor the service and sacrifice of these veterans, commemorate key events of the war, and educate Americans of all ages about the historical significance.
Snelling said those from the Korean conflict never received the thanks and appreciation they deserved.
