Oologah opens 4A State Softball Tourney against No. 4 Purcell

OOLOGAH — The quest for the Class 4A state softball championship begins today for the No. 10 Oologah Lady Mustangs.

Back in the spotlight for the first time since 1999, the Lady Mustangs square off at 1 p.m. against No. 4 Purcell (34-4).

Oologah (30-12) becomes the third team from Rogers County to battle for state supremacy in fastpitch softball.

Last week, top-ranked Washington knocked out Verdigris to end the Lady Cardinals’ season with a 30-10 overall record.

The other team from the county competing today at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium is the Class 6A No. 4-ranked Owasso Lady Rams, who have a 37-2 overall record.

The Lady Rams tangle with No. 8 Edmond North (32-8) at 3 p.m.

Oologah’s game will be on Field 4, while Owasso will compete on Field 3.

The Lady Mustangs are coached by Andrea Scott-Vaughan, who excelled in high school softball at Claremore.

Also, Oologah is riding a 15-game winning streak and are led by  the lone senior Delaney Gray.

The other 4A quarterfinal match-ups include: No. 1 Blanchard against Bethany at 11 a.m.; No. 15 Fort Gibson against No. 2 Tuttle at 3 p.m. and No. 3 Berryhill against No. 12 Harrah at 5 p.m.

Semifinals will start at noon on Friday with the state championship taking place at 11 a.m. Saturday.

“Champions don’t talk, they just perform.”
The Claremore High School freshmen Zebras brought home the Metro Lakes title last Monday night at Bishop Kelley, thanks to the “Heisman-like” performance of all-purpose standout Dustin Basks.
Basks scored Claremore’s first 20 points on a pass play, a kickoff return and an interception return — all in the first half.
Looking like former Michigan Wolverine sensation Charles Woodson, Basks proved to be ‘unstoppable’ while leading the Zebras to a 33-13 victory over the previously unbeaten Comets.
