TENNIS- Claremore girls tie Washington

CLAREMORE — The Claremore High School tennis teams opened spring play with a stellar performance Wednesday afternoon against Booker T. Washington.

The Lady Zebras notched a pair of victories to split 2-2 with Booker T. Washington, while the Zebras suffered a 7-2 setback.

Claremore’s Brooke Gunter (No. 1 singles) defeated Cristina Sanger, 6-1, 6-7, 10-6 and Booker T. Washington’s Lindsey Johnson (No. 2 singles) swept Claremore’s Kristin Richardson, 6-2, 6-2.

In girls doubles, Booker T. Washington’s Lindsey Pierce and Shaina Cash defeated Claremore’s Brittani Rader and Marisa York, 7-6, 6-2.

Also, Claremore’s Madison Mosier and Kashin Salley poured off a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Booker T. Washington’s Kaja Sangle and Aly Cash in No. 2 doubles.

On the boys side, Claremore notched its only victories in No. 3 singles and No. 5 singles.

Claremore’s Travis Beck (No. 3 singles) defeated Glade Inhofe , 8-5; followed by Claremore’s Josh James (No. 5 singles) winning 8-3 over Grant Plaster.

Booker T. Washington won the remaining singles matches.

Evan McElwain (No. 1 singles) defeated Claremore’s David Westfall, 6-0, 6-0; Maurice Colbert (No. 2 singles) held off Claremore’s Andrew Meredith, 6-4, 6-4; Patrick Turner (No. 4 singles) fought past Claremore’s Kramer Newsom, 8-2 and Richard Chyan (No. 6 singles) roared past Claremore’s Trevor Beck, 8-1.

Booker T. Washington also swept Claremore, 3-0 in boys doubles.

Colbert and McElwain (No. 1 doubles) defeated Claremore’s Meredith and Westfall, 8-1; Plaster and Turner (No. 2 doubles) needed two sets to sweep Claremore’s James and Newsom, 6-3, 7-5; and Chyan and Inhofe also held off Claremore’s Travis Beck and Trevor Beck, 6-3, 6-1.

The Claremore tennis team returns to action this weekend at the Jenks Tournament. The girls play on Friday, followed by the boys on Saturday.
