A car was struck by lightning after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday while traveling east on the Will Rogers Turnpike near mile marker 246 during a storm that moved through the county, according to fire department officials.

Catoosa Fire Chief Denus Benton said the call came in as a driver requesting an ambulance.

Verdigris Fire Department and Catoosa Fire Department responded to the call. Upon arrival Verdigris Fire Chief Mike Shaffer said he observed smoke coming from beneath the vehicle's hood.

The 2016 Toyota Prius Hybrid then caught fire. The occupants told fire officials there had been a loud noise and that lightning had struck the vehicle. The driver was able to maintain control but was quite shaken up, Benton said.
