With a regional win behind them, Claremore High School’s cheer team is statebound.
Last week the CHS cheer team won regionals, which were hosted at Union schools.
Of the 26-member squad, 18 girls were on the mat for the win.
Coach Ashley Long said the squad was scored in stunts, tumbling, pyramid/tosses, crowd involvement, the use of props and overall performance.
This year’s squad is young–with only three seniors on the team.
“And three of our four flyers had never competed at regionals before,” Long said.
While it may be new to a few of the members—winning at regionals is nothing new for these zebras.
Long said this is the third year in a row the team has won regionals.
“Last year we lost state by one point,” she said. “So we’re really hoping to bring that home this year.”
She said they put in countless hours of practice to get ready for competition and have rallied together as a team.
“They are very encouraging to one another and they keep a positive attitude during practice,” Long said.
CHS cheer will compete at state this weekend.
