Getting to know the Claremore City Council candidates: Ken Hayes

Ken Hayes

Editor’s note: The following is a submitted campaign announcement.

I am privileged to have been a citizen of Claremore since 1966, graduating from Claremore High School. Upon graduation, I immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving our country for four years, one year of that in the Vietnam War.

After an honorable discharge, I worked my way through four years of college at Northeastern Oklahoma State University, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technology in 1975. This allowed me to begin a 43-year career in Manufacturing Engineering, 38 years as Engineering Manager at Baldor Electric Company.

During my career, I also built and managed my own commercial leasing business in Claremore for 25 years. From 1991 to 1996, I was privileged to serve Claremore for five years as a City Councilman under two types of city government.

Some of the major accomplishments during my City Council service were the construction of new state-of-the-art library in Claremore, the conversion the old fairgrounds into the new Expo and Recreation Center, plus the development of the new Claremore Airport.

In the next five years, I see some major opportunities facing Claremore’s development, including the Highway 20 bypass within city limits, and the Country Club Road extension to the Southaven Road upgrade. Annexation of property west to the Verdigris River should be considered, and negotiation with the railroads to produce more efficient train flow through Claremore.

Our City’s mission should be to take quality care of our customers, our citizens.
