Habitat for Humanity

Applications are still open for a Habitat for Humanity Claremore home, but with the enrollment period closing in just two weeks, Habitat Executive Director Diane Forst advised those interested to submit their information soon.

“We’ll be accepting applications through the end of the month, anyone who meets the criteria and would like to be considered should apply by March 1,” Forst said.

Habitat for Humanity Claremore is an equal opportunity housing provider, which partners with families in need to help them build decent, affordable homes.

“The application process consists of completion of the application form, credit check, sex offender check, an office interview and a home interview,” Forst said.

Submission guidelines are based upon applicant’s need for housing, demonstrated ability to pay, and willingness to partner with Habitat for Humanity Claremore.

“Applicants who are able to demonstrate that their current housing situation is unsafe or in very poor conditions, particularly in an unsafe area, who rent or contribute to a rent which exceeds 35 percent of their net income, or who live in a residence in which the size is inadequate for the number of occupants or anticipated residents would be common of what Habitat would regard as a need for housing,” Forst said.

Applicants will not be approved should they qualify for conventional financing, presently own real estate, or if they have owned real estate within the past three years.

To demonstrate an ability to pay, an applicant’s gross household income should have a one-year history of employment or stable income, have an acceptable credit history, be able to afford anticipated mortgage payments, including property taxes and homeowners insurance, and their monthly payments for debt may not exceed 40 percent of their gross monthly income.

Also, should applicants have any bankruptcies, they must have been discharged for at least two years.

“Further, applicants must be willing to invest a minimum of 300 hours of sweat equity per family to begin upon the signing of the Family Partnership Agreement,” Forst said.

Habitat reserves the right to waive or alter any of the foregoing criteria based upon the unique situation of the applicant.
