Most of Claremore’s business district along Lynn Riggs went dark around 9:45 Friday night when an equipment malfunction caused Substation 1 to shut down. This then caused Substation 4 to go down.

“The area affected was the center part of town and south of town — which meant all the traffic lights on (Highway) 66,” said Tim Miller, City of Claremore director of utilities.

“Our main concern was to restore emergency services,” Miller said. “When our 911 service is down it automatically reroutes to Owasso. It was down less than five minutes.”

GRDA was called, and within 30 minutes had a crew working with the city electric department to help locate the problem.

“I am extremely pleased with the GRDA’s quick response and their support,” Miller said. “We were able to reroute Substation 4’s power around Substation 1 and get the south part of the city back up.”

Power was fully restored by 11:45 p.m., Miller said.

Even though the outage was the result of an unforseen problem that could not have been prevented, Miller said, the city has already begun to take steps to acquire special equipment that will help the electric department detect and address potential problems before they arise.
