Return fun to summer — send a kid to camp

(Editor’s Note: Names have been changed to protect the identity and privacy of the children, but they are real kids who can our help to make life more pleasant through the opportunity to attend summer camp.)

Dylan and Ella won’t spend their summer vacation like most kids. There is no money for visits to the ice cream shop, a trip to the amusement park or swimming lessons. None of summer break’s usual activities are possible.

After their dad died in a car wreck a couple of years ago, mom was left to make ends meet with just her disability check. She is on kidney dialysis three times a week.

But summer fun might not be lost for Dylan and Ella if they can attend camp at Heart O’Hills Salvation Army Camp near Tahlequah.

Claremore Progress readers are being asked to donate funds to send 40 Rogers County children — 20 boys and 20 girls — to camp June 26 through July 1.

With camp costs raised to $170 per child, the need for your help this year is even greater. A total of $6800 must be raised.

All the money will be used for campers. Funds are administered by the Share the Spirit Foundation.

The camp fee includes lodging, meals, insurance, and a canteen to buy snacks and craft materials.

Department of Human Services and Child Welfare coordinate camper eligibility, physicals and paper work. The Pilot Club of Claremore provides “ditty bags” with shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, washcloths, hair brushes and combs. Salvation Army — Claremore Unit provides clothing, bedding, shoes, etc.

“Thank goodness for Salvation Army,” said Angie Graves with the Rogers County Department of Human Services. “They are providing funds to buy much needed summer clothing for the kids. We are truly blessed to have such a caring Salvation Army Board.”

All of the children are not on welfare. All do not come from families without a working parent. But all are children from families where there is no money for anything extra.
