CLAREMORE — The RoCo Readers program, sponsored by the Rogers County Literacy Council, is in desperate need for volunteers to fill the need for this year's expanded 2018-19 school session.

The RoCo Readers program pairs volunteers with elementary school children. Volunteers read to the children in local schools.

RoCo Readers coordinator Ashley Cook is about halfway to her goal of signing up 24 to 30 volunteers.

Last year, the program had 18 volunteers who read to students in local schools. This year, the program has added Westside Elementary, Inola and Justus-Tiawah schools.

Volunteers are asked to read for 30 minutes a week. The children will then receive a book at the end of each session, a gift from the RCLC.

Last year, the program gifted 480 books to students in the program.

Cook hopes to begin training the new volunteers on Aug. 25, but those interested will beed to be signed up by Aug. 22.
