The Cherokee Nation has confirmed that a jockey injured last weekend at Will Rogers Downs in Rogers County has died.
According to Amanda Clinton, the Cherokee Nation’s communications director, the unidentified jockey was injured in the third race at the racetrack east of Claremore Saturday afternoon, after which, he was taken to a Tulsa hospital.
The horse he was riding apparently hit a rail during a race, throwing the jockey over that rail.
Following the incident, races scheduled for the rest of the day were cancelled.
Will Rogers Downs is a racino owned by the Cherokee Nation.
