Published May 14, 2008 09:53 am - Henry R. “Ron” Huffman Claremore, OK — His Life—His Legacy
Memorial service for Henry R. “Ron” Huffman will be held 6 p.m., Friday, May 23, at the Murray Road Baptist Church with Rev. Carlton Stokes officiating. Ron was born in Frederick on April 15, 1935, to Henry and LEC Rodden Huffman. He left this earth to be with his Lord on May 6, 2008. He was 73 years old. After one year of college he joined the Air Force and became an air traffic controller. Eight years later he went to work for the F.A.A., and in 1963, he was one of the original controllers who opened the tower at Riverside Airport in Jenks. He transferred to Tulsa International Airport in 1970, and retired in 1990, after 35 years as an ATC. An accomplished pilot, he loved airplanes his whole life. He was instrument rated, a certified flight instructor, had a multi-engine ticket, and a commercial pilot’s license. When Doug was about 10 years old, they taught themselves to build and fly remote controlled airplanes. Later they owned a paraplane and a weedhopper ultralight. Ron’s favorite saying was, “He who dies with the most toys WINS!” He loved fishing almost as much as he did flying. Hopefully he will be remembered as a good son, husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend; a man who always saw the positive side of things; someone who always made you smile. He is survived by his wife of 51 and 1/2 years, Shirley; two sons: David and his wife, Val of Lincoln, Ill., and Doug and his wife, Michelle of Tulsa. He also leaves behind four granddaughters, one great-grandson, and two great-granddaughters.
