Published July 24, 2008 10:07 am - JH Rains Claremore, OK — JH Rains, 77, of the Sequoyah community passed from this life Sunday, July 20, 2008. Services will be 3 p.m., Friday, July 25, 2008, in the Chapel of the Garden at Rice Funeral Service. Rev. Martin Potter and Rick Stanbro will officiate. Entombment will follow at Oakhaven Memorial Gardens. Friends may visit at the funeral home until 7 this evening. JH’s family will receive visitors from 6 to 7.
JH was born in Amarillo, Texas, on Oct. 4, 1930, to John Henry and Susie Mary (Jackson) Rains. At the age of 16 he enlisted in the United States Army and was sent to serve in the Korean War for three years. After an honorable discharge, JH returned to his roots of Ketchum which is where he met and married Arzilla Harding on Aug. 6, 1951. They made their home in Wichita, Kan. During this union three children were born; Glenda Mae, Edmond Leo and John Leroy. JH held a variety of jobs but when he employment began with McDonnell Douglas Aircraft in 1952, he realized his true passion. He was employed there for 37 years prior to his retirement. With deep pride in his Indian heritage, JH was always passing along little stories of his Cherokee ancestry to his beloved grandkids. A mechanic at heart he was always working on something and anytime help was needed on a project, he was ready and willing to lend a hand. JH is survived by his loving wife Wanda Arzilla of the home; daughter, Glenda and husband David Francis of Gentry, Ark.; son Eddy and wife Susie of Claremore and daughter-in-law, Erica Gotaas, also of Claremore; eight grandchildren, Richelle and John Francis of Gentry, Blake and Shelby Rains of Claremore, John Rains, Jr. of Langley, Jennifer Rains of Tulsa, and Ashley and Jarett Rains of Claremore; and three great-grandchildren, Cody and Colton Francis of Gentry, and Kelsey Henderson of Tulsa. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Johnny, brothers Ray and Leo Rains and sisters, Aleen Kollefrath and Sue Bailey.
