Dr. Gregoire Joseph Barrette

CLAREMORE — A prayer service for Dr. Gregoire Joseph Barrette will be 7 p.m. Monday, December 16, 2013 in the Chapel of the Garden at Rice Funeral Service. The family will receive visitors at the service.  Gregoire passed away on Dec. 11, 2013.  He was 70.

Born on March 28, 1943 in Lorreinville, Quebec, Canada to Lucien and Jeanne (McFedden) Barrette, Gregoire was an intelligent and talented man.  After faithfully serving in the Canadian Army, Gregoire continued his education on the G.I. Bill at Ottawa University.

Gregoire went on to work as Chief Resident Doctor and OB/GYN at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York while living in New Jersey.

While holding this position, he was instrumental in bringing in doctors from other countries and offering them the privilege and opportunity of studying under him while benefitting from his teaching.

He also would express his gift of generosity by opening his home to many of those young doctors.

It was through his work that Gregoire met the love of his life, Suzanne.  He was treating Suzanne’s daughter, Pascale, when their paths crossed.  Gregoire and Suzanne were married on December 17th, 1988 in Haull, Quebec across the Ottawa River.  Suzanne referred to Gregoire as “My Prince” and “the man of my dreams.”  The two shared a tremendous and undying love for one another.

Gregoire always treated Suzanne with the utmost respect, never afraid to show his affection and devotion for his wife.  Suzanne recalls Gregoire calling from the operating room and sometimes asking “What is my little wife fixing me for dinner tonight?”  She was happy to care for him as he always cared for her.

They cherished their time together and Suzanne even said his snoring was “a song to her ears.”

A brilliant individual, Gregoire spoke 6 different languages fluently.  He had a passion for classical music and listened to many different composers.  Gregoire loved to read biographies and had an extensive library on all the kings of Paris, France.

He also loved to collect old surgical instruments, some that he would inconspicuously remove from the trash.

He enjoyed fishing for pike and trout in the far northern regions of Quebec and Belleterre was one of their favorite destinations.  They also enjoyed their time together in Napa Valley, CA at the Milliken Inn where Gregoire was always up by 5:00 a.m. heading out with his guide for a day of fishing. Gregoire was a sensible man with a wonderful sense of humor and a contagious laugh.  He treated all people in his path with kindness and respect, especially the nurses and staff with whom he worked.  Some even expressed they will greatly miss his recognizable little laugh or giggle.

This loving husband, father and friend will be missed by all whose lives he touched.

Gregoire is survived by his wife of 25 years, Suzanne; children Ian Barrette and wife France, Steven Barrette and wife Janick, Pascale Vaillancourt and husband Roch, Jasmin and wife Ghislaine (Ayotte) Barrette, and Lorrain and wife Francoise (Levesque) Barrette, Christiane and husband Michel Doire, Madeleine and husband Raymond Boischlair, Jacqueline and husband Feu Louison Dube, Therese and husband Jean-Paul Renaud; sister Suzanne Barrette; brothers Pascal and Paul Barrette; grandchildren Michelle, Maxime and Hugo Barrette, Alex, Thomas and Marilou Vaillancourt.  Gregoire is preceded in death by his parents, first wife Yvette and son Jacquelin.
