Johnny W. Golbek

CLAREMORE — A celebration of the life of Johnny Golbek will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013 at Claremore Assembly of God. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery under the direction of Rice Funeral Service. Visitation will be Monday from 1-7 with family receiving visitors from 5-7.

Born in Inola on April 27, 1936 to John and Hannah (Weibe) Golbek, Johnny was raised and educated in Inola where he graduated from Inola High School in 1954. Johnny moved to the Claremore area in 1978 and Claremore has been home ever since.

In 1960 Johnny married Ann Harrison and their union was gifted with four children. Johnny was an exceptional father and grandfather.  He loved his family and held them together through difficult times. Johnny’s family knew they could always count on him. If someone did not know how to do something, they called dad. His family said of him, “He was the kind of dad that came out to work at your house because he wanted to help and knew you were busy.” Johnny was a good man, always wanting a project to work on.

A hard worker before retirement from Inola Farm Elevator, Johnny never changed; he continued to be a hard worker for his family. Johnny hated the cold but loved the heat. He enjoyed being outside working. When the work was done at his house, he would make his way over to the kid’s houses to find more work to do. His family proclaimed he was the best yardman in the state.

A doting grandfather, Papa/Grandpa, to his grandchildren, Johnny always carried candy or gum in his pocket to hand out to the grands. He never missed a holiday and always brought something to share with his loved ones. Johnny’s favorite foods were Pepsi and anything covered in gravy. His family joked that he would have eaten bark if it were covered in gravy.

Johnny made everyone in his family feel special. Every holiday he bought cards, personalized and delivered them to his loved ones’ home, if they weren’t there they’d have a card hanging on the door when they got home. Johnny also never missed a birthday. He was the first one to call and wish you a happy birthday. For instance, he knew his daughter-in-law woke at 7:07 a.m. every morning and would call her every year on her birthday at 7:07 a.m. to wish her a happy birthday.

As a fun-loving Papa, Johnny had a ball with his grandchildren. He did not hesitate to clear out all the furniture in a room for the grandchildren to play or do gymnastics. He showed them how to nail 2x4s together for entertainment while he proceeded to work on another project. Johnny was an affectionate father and grandfather, often referring to his loved ones as “hon” and never missing an opportunity for a hug or two. Any time he or his family left he always said “I love you” and if it was at his home, he would stand at the door and wave until they pulled away. Another of his beloved friends was his pet Jack Russell Terrier, Lady Bug, whom he loved dearly.

This loving father and grandfather will be missed by all who knew him. Johnny is survived by his children Connie Wood and husband Eddie, Daryl Golbek and wife Lesa, Deb Harris and husband Thomas, Calvin John Golbek and wife Anita; 10 grandchildren, April Reece and husband Chris, Stephanie Ricketts, Jessica Freeman and husband Kyle, Lonnie Jon Golbek, Dwayne Golbek and wife Aubrey, Jeremiah Harris and wife Jennifer, Albert Harris and wife Lindsay, Tiffany, Meranda and Malarie Golbek; four great-grandchildren plus one on the way; sister Lillian Rogers and husband Curtis; and numerous nieces and nephews. Johnny is preceded in death by his parents, sister Rosie Froese, and brother Adolph Golbek.
